Woman’s History Month Day 4

Bessie overcame obstacles. She wanted to fly but no one in the U.S. would let her enroll in flight school. There is more than one way to get to a goal. She taught herself French, (Parlez-vous Francais?) and went to Paris so she could earn her pilot’s license. She became the first woman of African-American and Native American descent to earn an international aviation pilot’s license.

She returned to great acclaim in the U.S. But to earn a living she needed training to be a stunt pilot and she couldn’t find anyone in the U.S. willing to teach her. Undaunted, she went back to France, the Netherlands and Germany for that training. As a child she vowed to one day amount to something. At her first appearance at an American air show she was billed as “the worlds greatest woman flier.”
